Bar Crawl Tokyo

Tokyo is a great place to go bar crawling!  You can find any number of tiny bars to squeeze into, and being such a sprawling metropolis, you can find the most amazing theme bars imaginable.  Anything goes, and usually does!  Here is a selection of some of the Tokyo bars I hit recently, and some I didn't quite make into, but had a peer into from street level.

Shimokitazawa is a favourite haunt, with some iconic bars tucked away in side streets.

Trouble Peach has a suitably inviting doorway, street sign, and enigmatic name.  Upstairs is a dark bar filled with vinyl and booze.

Next door is the equally enigmatically named Idiot Savant bar.

Busted peering into a bar with my camera!

Sleeping in bars seems to be fine.  Not sure if this was staff or a loitering customer...

Sometimes just looking in from the outside offers great inviting visuals...

   um...no comment...?

Bar Budokan is on the corner near some other tiny tiny bars near the Shimokitazawa Town Hall, just up the road from the Shimo Disc Union.  Somewhat smaller than the actual Budokan, the bar has 3 seats at the bar, and another 3 or 4 chairs out on the footpath.  Very intimate.

The bar staff at Bar Budokan has a small triangular work space, measuring (I would guess) around 2 meters triangular!  And he still has time for smiles!

Now to my favourite Heavy Metal (and other) bars in Shinjuku.  This is the infamous Mother Rock Bar in Kabukicho, Shinjuku.  This shot (and the following) were taken with an ultra-wide angle lens, so the bars appear larger than they actually are.  Mother fills with about 9 or so people.  It's in a basement, is dark, and loud as hell.  Lots of Heavy Metal and Punk to choose from, they have a music request menu which also includes non-heavy metal as well.  But be prepared for loud, hard music all night long!

Godz, just around the corner from Mother Rock Bar, is purely, evilly, Heavy Metal Only!  This bar is spacious compared to most of the bars featured here, but still on the small side, also in a basement, somewhat better lit, and an incomparable selection of Heavy Metal of all kinds!  Requests are also welcome, the louder the better!  Also a good place to go to try and catch up with touring heavy metal acts who drop in, and leave signed shikishi (square pieces of paperboard) which Godz has a nice collection of.

A recent discovery of mine, also up the road from Godz, still in Kabukicho, Shinjuku, the Neon Genesis Evangelion Bar.  A bar dedicated to the ground-breaking anime series, full of eva toys, posters, soundtracks, and ephemera, the tv plays episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion.  And the final kicker (as if that wasn't enough), the staff will shout 'Service Service' when you depart (which fans of the show will understand and appreciate).  It is also right next door to the One-Piece bar, which was closed at the time I wanted to grab a picture.  Ah well...next time.

The Ayanami Rei side of the toy collection at the Eva bar, Shinjuku.  Outrageous!

The Dhali Curry Bar, a bit further into Kabukicho, has drinks and food, and an exterior and interior decorated with tastefully arranged masses of thrown away techno-trash.  It's like drinking inside a computer!  Dhali, the owner, also runs Funk-time, a Psy Trance club, not far away.

Of course, when we are talking about tiny bars and Shinjuku, no visit is complete without trying one or 5 of the ultra-tiny bars in Golden Gai, a series of narrow alleyways crammed with over 200 stupidly small bars.  Anything goes, theme-wise here.  There was a bar dedicated to the Pink Floyd album Atom Heart Mother (that's specialised!), which I couldn't find this time around, so I'm not sure if it's still there or not.  But there's still plenty of choice.  This one is Bar Albatross (which also has another, equally tiny bar in Omoide Yokocho or Memory Lane near Shinjuku station) which attracts Japanese, local ex-pats and tourists alike.  The one in Golden Gai has 3 stories (well, 2 and a half), and is seriously cramped, but gorgeously decked out.

A shot of the corner of Bar Albatross, Golden Gai

Over to Roppongi quickly, a stupid all-nighter in Roppongi is likely to start out at Bar Mistral, also known as the Train Bar.  The exterior (shown here) looks like a train carriage that crashed into the wall and was converted into a bar.  The interior is, you guessed it, cramped, and decked out like a train carriage.

Back to Kabukicho, and another loud request bar, bar Psy (which, as far as I can tell, has no Psy, but lots of heavy metal, and not heavy metal), just across the road and up a few floors from Mother Rock Bar.

In Kichijoji, Harmony Ka Yokocho has around 100 shops, crammed in to a small sprawl, and the beer flows.  It's a great little area to photograph, and drink in.

Psychedelic Photography

The idea behind these photographs is fairly simple.  They were all taken in a basement Psy Trance club deep in the bowels of Kabuki-cho, Shinjuku, Tokyo.  The club was saturated with the thick sounds of dark psy trance, which was in turn thumping the table I had my camera set on.  There were also dancers getting 'in the way' of the shot, and the pissy little tri-pod I had the camera set upon was wholly inadequate for the job of keeping the camera steady.
Now all of these obstacles would normally interfere with a clear shot.  But I figured that, rather than try to compensate for all of these elements, why not let them, in fact, guide the camera on its long-exposure shot.  The rhythmic doof of the dark psy added its own rhythm on the shot (through the table, and on the hapless tri-pod), dancing the 'subject' across the lens in many cases, and so this movement itself became the photo.  The people dancing 'in the way' of the shot became negative space, de-emphasizing elements of the play of light across the lens also, adding their own 'mix' to the shot.
Many of the shots are close-up shots, 'mixed' by the music and the dancers, of the dj booth decorations.  A 'clear' shot of the stage can be seen as the final shot, for reference.  But the psychedelic effects speak for themselves, and the only alterations that have been made to them, in the colourful psychedelic tradition, is pushing the colour of some of the shots.  All else is free of manipulation.

Prints (and stuff) of some of these shots can be purchased through RedBubble at this link:

The darker area in the bottom right hand corner of the shot is the space created by a dancer moving across the lights

This is a 'clear' shot of the dj booth at the club.  Incidentally, this is Funk-time in Kabuki-cho.

Morbid Angel should say 'Thank You Metallica!'

Ya know...if I were Morbid Angel...I would be drafting a letter right now to Metallica and thanking them for putting out 'Lulu', which saves them from having their own album 'Illud Divinum Insanus' going down in history as the worst heavy metal release of 2011.
"Mustaine and Newstead must be laughing their dicks off right now"!

At least Morbid Angel aren't taking anyone else down with them.

Heavy Metal Halloween \m/ The Ultimate Playlist

It's the Heavy Metal holiday, and what better way to spend it than going around and spooking folks with a killer soundtrack.  And here is a great heavy metal soundtrack for Halloween.  This playlist will appear for my heavy metal radio show 'Sleeping in the Fire' on Phoenix FM, Bendigo this Saturday night, the 29th of October.

1.  Intro and A Cautionary Tale - Sabbat (UK)

A great atmospheric intro, a spell is being cast, a bell is tolling, and we are immediately being thrown into Halloween.  Then a wholesome tale about Faustus selling his soul to the Devil follows with the intensive thrash that Sabbat had to offer.  Play it loud!

2.  Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

Classic Sabbath with their self-titled song from their self-titled album.  Old Skool evil, perfect for the scary occasion.

3. Welcome to my Nightmare - Alice Cooper

The original shock-rocker may be more at home these days on the golf course, (which is arguably scary), but this classic song deserves to be on every heavy metal Halloween playlist.

4.  Mr. Blackwell - Kiss

This evil little gem appeared on Kiss's least favourite, and worst selling album, 'Music from the Elder', but Gene Simmons was at his demonic best with this classic spook-fest.

5.  Magical Spell - Masters of Reality

A slow, hypnotic desert rock piece.  Yeah yeah, not strictly scary, it's about being caught in the 'spell' of a woman with the 'right ass', but it mentions a 'spell' and it's a great song, so it makes it's own spot right here.

6.  Dracula - Macabre

The title alone is good enough for inclusion to a Halloween playlist, but that intro seals it.  Bring it on!

7.  Evil Spells - Morbid Angel

Classic brutality from one of the the founders of death metal, and another song about spells.  But evil ones this time.  Mwa ha ha...

8.  Left Hand Path - Entombed

Seriously brutality from Sweden's Entombed, and the title needs no explaining, but after the blistering downtuned assault, the song breaks out into Fred Myrow's theme song to 'Phantasm'.

9. Dead Skin Mask - Slayer

Now there's a Halloween mask to scare everyone.  And get you arrested.  And evaluated.  And locked up for a very long time.  But meanwhile, what a great Halloween!  Oh, and the song is killer.  no pun intended.

10. Pit of Zombies - Cannibal Corpse

What Halloween playlist would be complete without a song about zombies.  And be sure that 'Thriller' is not making any kind of appearance here.  With their usual subtelty, Cannibal Corpse wrote this classic about a peril that anyone could all too easily find themselves in in this modern world; inexplicably finding yourself suspended above a pit of zombies and being devoured from the feet up.  Don't you hate it when that happens?

11. Dragula - Rob Zombie

Now that we have that little cliche out of the way...

12. From Here to the Hearse - Wednesday 13

More spooky rock from Wednesday 13, who seem to be attempting to corner the Halloween market.  And why not.

13. Mr. Crowley - Ozzy Osbourne

Let's face it, there are any number of Ozzy songs that could comfortably fit into a Halloween playlist, but the dramatic mad organ intro to Mr. Crowley sealed it for me.  And singing about a real life magician certainly adds a little cred to the whole playlist.  Just put the bat down now...

14. Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden

Yep, evil numbers, a song about the Big Man down there, and that Vincent Price-esque intro read from the Book of Revelation is a sealer.  (For the record, the intro was read by Barry Clayton, as the band originally wanted Vincent Price to read the intro, but he wouldn't do it for anything less than 25,000 pounds.)

15. The Siege and Investiture of Baron von Frankenstein's Castle at Weisseria - Blue Oyster Cult

If one had to put a BOC song in a Heavy Metal Halloween playlist, most folk would probably go for their famous 'Don't Fear the Reaper', which is a great song, and a great choice.  But I went with 'The Siege', firstly because it's such a great name for a song, and secondly because it mentions Frankenstein, and finally, it's such a great song.  Winner.

16. White Witch - Savatage

Catchy as hell, a solid song, and it's about a witch.  I rest my case.

17. Tommy Knockers - Blind Guardian

A song about Tommy Knockers?  Oh, let's have that.

18. Trick or Treat - Fastway

Yep, there's no escaping this song for a Halloween playlist.  The memorable track from the OST from the cult movie, it's the '80's all over again.  And that's probably the scariest part.

19. Halloween - King Diamond

Another must have inclusion from the spookiest guy on the planet.  We don't want to know how he sings that high, just keep pounding out concept album after concept album about horror.  You could probably play just about anything from King Diamond for Halloween, but he has made it easy for all of us with the title of this song.

20. Halloween - Helloween

Yep, another no-brainer.  Good song from these crazy German boys, an iconic and epic 13 minute plus song covers all the bases.  And given the band's pumpkin fetish, you could probably prop up nearly any of their album covers in the front window and boom!  instant Halloween decoration!  FTW

21.  Mr. Scary - Dokken

An instrumental, but the name says it all, and it's a great song to keep things at a good solid pace.  Play it loud!

22. Monsterman - Accept

Monsterman?  Yeah. baby!  A classic metal singalong to scare the neighbours with.  And a great song as well!  Remember...LOUD!

23. Freddy Kruger - S.O.D.

A song about Freddy Kruger?  oh let's do that!

24. Angel Witch - Angel Witch

Classic NWOBHM about a witch.  Who is an angel.  An Angel Witch!  Who cares what it's about, it has witch in the title, and it's a classic song.  Play it loud!

25. Runnin' with the Devil - Van Halen

Yep, another song about the Devil.  And running with him.  Presumably to get out there and grab some Halloween sweets.

26.  The Call of Ktulu - Metallica

A great instrumental to finish up with, and loosely associated with Halloween, as the title is a mongrel mis-spelling of the classic H. P. Lovecraft tale of cosmic horror.  Horror, I say!  And if the party isn't over, go the hell back to the first song and play them all over again!

Happy Halloween you ghastly creatures you!

The Pinnacles, Western Australia photo set

I have just uploaded a dozen or so photos on Redbubble that I took when I was over in Western Australia at the beginning of this year, taken at the Pinnacles.  Share and Enjoy!
